Week 32, Day 2: Review revolt!

Odd Block Schedule. Test review and finish some old labs.

Review revolt! I revolted against review only.  I through a mini lab into the lesson plan.  4 days of review and testing made me psycho.!

A week or two ago we started the exothermic/endothermic lab. WE did not get them all finished back then and I used today to do it. Nice break from review. In one or two classes we even started the conservation of mass lab.

I hope this helps.

Week 31, Day 2: Never Again

Even block period: conservation of matter lab.

Rainy weather. I have a dept chair meeting today a lunch so I decided to have my lunch with my wife during part of  prep and watch the rain fall and visit with her.

During the meeting my principal made the comment, "With two weeks to state testing, Labs are great but there are no labs on the Star Test.".  He was right. We will need to review.

Notebook turn  grade review. I'm not doing this again. I will find another way. It takes three minutes to score one that is perfectly set up. I have about 220 kids. 660 minutes total grading. That's 11 hours of grading.

I hope this helps.

Week 24, Day 5: Reading, Reading, Outlining, and Jury Duty.

EVEN BLOCK SCHEDULE: Go over the INTRO TO THE ATOM homework, Reading a passage to my students: A MEASURE OF HIS SUCCESS, Show students how to outline a textbook chapter.

I often read a science story to my students and have them ACTIVELY LISTEN by recording key words and definitions, facts and reactions to the story. Today's story is about Lavoisier figuring out the law of conservation of matter.

See my school website--California Teachers--Reading passages for my power point and a copy of the story.

This is a nice way to introduce that theory and to introduce balancing equations.

I have rarely have kids read their science textbooks.  They often have to to the chapter vocabulary but rarely read it.  I have decided to have them read and outline certain chapter sections. Students really went to work on it in class.  I was amazed actually.

My colleague Sean Marzolf has Jury duty.  For the next 3 weeks.  Once a week we will plan to have his substitute teacher and me switch rooms so his kids can do a lab.

I hope this helps,
